Oh dear! I've just watched Janet Street-Porter's report about smoothies on Gordon Ramsay's The F Word. Basically she said that they're very bad for us and they're full of sugar and it's much better for us to eat fresh fruit. She also said that they contain more sugar in them than fizzy drinks. However, she did only look at supermarket smoothies and not homemade ones.
Unfortunately, for many people the easiest way for them to get some fruit inside them is by drinking smoothies. Also, you need to remember that the sugar found in smoothies is natural whereas fizzy drinks contain many other additives too. As for smoothies making you put on weight - if you eat or drink anything in excess you're going to put on weight so that can be dismissed!
We recommend that you make your own rather than buying them so look at our smoothie recipes for some inspiration.
EDIT - I see Channel 4 have used the same image on their website as we did to illustrate our smoothies. I hope they didn't nick it!
